Many clients would rather be any other place on Earth than my office for an initial consultation. One of the best parts of my job is being able to explain the many benefits of discharging debt the right way, through bankruptcy. I enjoy seeing the sense of relief on my clients’ faces when the light bulb turns on.
Most people who come to my office have been worrying day and night about what they are going to do next. The uncertainty is almost as bad as the debt. Relationships with spouses and children are being damaged because of the mental anguish. When we establish a plan together, you find direction and eliminate worry. You will know what to do and when to do it. For instance, if a creditor calls asking for payment, you give them my name and number, and say “goodbye.”
Also, people often worry that all of their possessions will be taken away in a bankruptcy. Over ninety per cent of bankruptcy filers keep all of their property. That’s right – all of it. The bankruptcy courts were created to give people a second chance at prosperity, because when you do well, the country as a whole benefits. You have a better chance at success if you don’t have to go out and buy all new stuff.
Third, people worry that all their coworkers, friends and family will know. Although a bankruptcy is a public filing, there are only two groups who generally know about it: your creditors and the people you tell. You would be surprised at the number of people around you who have already filed.
Finally, people worry that their credit is going to be ruined forever. Bankruptcy is a blemish that can stay on your credit report for up to 10 years. But the truth is, clearing away old debt provides you with a chance to establish a new credit history. Unfortunately, each lingering debt is already a blemish on your credit report, and another blemish is added each month you don’t pay. I’ll walk you through the steps to build your credit back up.
